Introduction

Normally, the Granular and PCLinuxOS repositories contain RPM packages organized into sections like:

  • main
  • extras
  • kde
  • nonfree
  • testing (or test)

The testing section is where only those packages are placed that have not been fully tested for functionality. In most cases, the testing section contains newer versions of packages found otherwise in the "main" section in previous versions. You might want to open the testing section if you want to install the latest version of available packages or you want to install a package available only in the testing section but not in the other sections of repositories. Another reason could be that the testing section contains dependencies for certain packages available in the other section of the repositories.

Opening the testing section

To access the list of repositories, open Synaptic Package Manager. Then go to Settings > Repositories.

For PCLinuxOS repository

By default, only one PCLinuxOS repo is enabled in Granular (second in the list of repos). To enable the testing section, just add the word "testing" in the Section(s) field, press OK and finally press "Reload" on the main Synaptic interface.

NOTE: This method applies to all the PCLinuxOS repositories mentioned in the list (enabled and disabled).
