Introduction

Getting connected to the Internet is probably one of the first tasks a user does when setting up the system to his/her preferences. Connecting to the Internet in Granular is quite easy. All you need to know is what type of connection you have, and you are off.

The steps to making a new connection follow.

Dial-up Connection

Although most of the modern times computer users don't use the dial-up method to connect to the Internet and use some alternative ways, still there are users who do use a dial-up connection. If you are one of them, follow these steps:

  • Go to Menu > Internet > Remote Access > KPPP.
  • Click on the Configure button. In the Accounts tab (which opens by default), click on New to set up a new account for Internet access.

  • In the resulting window that appears, the tab that opens by default is the Dial tab. In most of the cases, you have to make changes in this tab only.
  • Give your connection a name, add necessary phone numbers of your ISP (Internet Service Provider). Leave the rest to their default values. After this press the OK button.
  • You are then taken back to the KPPP Configuration window. Go to the Modems tab and click on New (before this step, make sure that your modem is connected to the telephone via the telephone line, and that you have your modem on).
  • Give your modem a name and leave the other things to their default values. Click on the OK button, and again press it on the KPPP Configuration window.
  • Now, you are done configuring the modem. On the main interface, fill in your Login ID (username) and Password. Finally, click on connect to get connected.

Notes:

  • If your modem is not detected by KPPP, go to Configure > Modems > Edit > Modem > Query Modem.
  • A still easier way to connect to Internet using dial-up connection is opening Granular Control Center and going to Network & Internet > Set up a new network interface > Analog telephone modem (POTS). After you click the Next button there, your modem will be automatically detected and you will be guided through the procedure to set up the connection.

Other Connection Types (LAN, DSL, ISDN...)

Follow these steps if you have one of the following connection types:

  • Ethernet
  • Satellite (DVB)
  • Cable Modem
  • DSL
  • ISDN
  • Wireless
  • GPRS/Edge/3G
  • Bluetooth dial-up networking

Setting up the connection is very easy here. Just open Granular Control Center and go to Network & Internet > Set up a new network interface. There, select the desired connection type, click Next, and an appropriate wizard will start that will guide you through the rest of connection setup. Image:Getting-connected.png
